Process and outcome evaluation of the “No more smoking! It's time for physical activity” program

2013

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the program “No more smoking! It's time for physical activity”, with a mixed methods design, in order to collect information to improve the program for future applications. Methods Forty patients across five anti-smoking clinics in Central Greece completed the program. Counselors' records and participants' questionnaires and interviews were used as data in order to evaluate the programs' process and outcome. Results Quantitative measures before and after the program revealed significant differences on smoking behavior, physical activity (PA) behavior, self-efficacy, and smoking habit measures. Qualitative data implied that the promotion…

Smoking Behavior: A Cross-Sectional Study to Assess the Dimensionality of the Brief Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives and Identify Di…

2014

Introduction The present study aims to investigate the dimensionality of the brief version of the Wisconsin Inventory of Smoking Dependence Motives (B-WISDM) and identify different smoking motivational profiles among young daily smokers (N = 375). Methods We tested 3 measurement models of the B-WISDM using confirmatory factor analysis, whereas cluster analysis was used to identify the smokers' motivational profiles. Furthermore, we compared clusters toward dependence level and the number of cigarettes smoked per day using analysis of variance tests. Results The results confirmed that the B-WISDM measures 11 first-order intercorrelated factors. The second-order model, originally proposed for…

The Role of Desire in The Prediction of Intention

2011

This paper is based on the notion that desire represents an important motivational aspect of the decision-making process. Thus, we examined the hypotheses that desire (1) predicts behavioral intentions and (2) mediates the effects of theory of planned behavior (TPB) components and past behavior on an individual’s intention to quit smoking. The analysis is based on three separate conditions in which the intention to quit smoking during the next 1, 4, or 6 months, respectively, was measured; the three conditions contained identical variables. The results of the hierarchical regression analysis show that there are sufficient grounds for including desire as an additional predictor in the TPB m…

Exercise and Smoking : A Literature Overview

2015

The purpose of this review is to summarize the more recent research findings regarding the relationship between exercise and smoking behavior. Reviewed studies have been presented according to themes and research design types. Initially cross-sectional and longitudinal epidemiological studies have been reviewed in order to map findings regarding the correlations between those two behaviors. Moreover, studies exploring variables that function as mediators or moderators between smoking and exercise relationship have been included. Then studies examining the possible preventive effects of exercise on smoking behavior for adolescents are reviewed and implications for developing effective preven…

FACTORES DE RIESGO EN LA ETAPA DE INICIACIÓN EN LA CONDUCTA ADICTIVA AL TABACO

2011

Addictive smoking behavior often is described as a process involving a series of stages. Because the initation stage is crucial in the acquisition of smoking behavior, the purpose of this article is to describe the most important factors operative at this stage, such as stress, coping, social skills, self-efficacy and attitude changes. Problems posed by programs designed to prevent addictive smoking behavior and methodological and conceptual issues concerning intervention programs and theories of smoking are discussed. Finally, issues related to future research in the area of smoking cessation are considered.

Like Parents, like Teenagers: A Romanian Youth Smoking Overview

2015

AbstractThis paper estimates how family model influences youth's smoking behaviors and describes smoking behavior in Romania nowadays. A questionnaire-based survey was used and data was collected from a national sample (1,364 people: 536 male and 828 female; average age 22,71 years and SD=3,128). The paper analyses only the items relevant for smoking behavior.Using a quasi-experimental design, we found a significant difference determinated by father's model (ρ(1364)= 0,158, p < 0,05), mother's model (ρ(1362)=0,155, p < 0,05), and brothers/sisters’ model (ρ(1362)=0,219, p < 0,05), regarding smoking behavior. Keywords: smoking behaviour, Romanian teenagers, parental model, Health Psychology
